Shoppers Kill Wal-Mart Worker?

I know shopping is important to some people.  I also know in this down economy saving pennies is a top priority, but this is just ridiculous.  Apparently shoppers surged into a Long Island Wal-Mart, breaking down the doors and knocking down a 34-year-old temporary employee, killing him in the process. Four other shoppers, including a pregnant woman, were also taken to the hospital with injuries.  Read the article here.

Is it just me or does that seem excessive?  I mean, I've always thought people who go out shopping at 4 a.m. are crazy anyway, but this just takes the case.

How sad. :(

We Have Officially Crossed A Line

This week, the kids are visiting the Rat Bastard.  We alternate holidays and it's his year to have them for Thanksgiving.  Actually, I think it's my year to have them for Thanksgiving and his for Christmas, but since I'd rather have them for Christmas, I didn't complain about him wanting them this week.

Because they haven't seen my parents in a couple weeks my mom asked if they could spend the night Friday night.  I didn't mind, even though they were going to be gone for a week, because hey, I'm a mom and they're my kids.  If you're a mother, you'll understand this. If you aren't, this might not make sense.  But as much as I love my children, sometimes I love them even more when they aren't around.  Hey, that doesn't make me a bad mother, it just makes me human.

Anyway, since the kids were gone MM and I decided to have a date night.  We don't often get to spend quality alone time together without the kids.  Usually when we have a night to ourselves we just hang out at home doing boring stuff like watching t.v. and playing on the internet.  So I told him we should get out of the house and do something together, like see a movie or go out to dinner. Just something to have some quality time together.

We kind of nixed the movie idea, mostly because neither of us wanted to sit in the theatre that long.  Instead we decided to have dinner out and then watch a movie at home together.  MM said, "We'll turn off our phones and computers and just snuggle on the couch, ok?"  How could I say no to that?  And more importantly, why would I want to?

We decided on Applebees for dinner because I was craving boneless BBQ wings.  We each ordered a beer and just sat and people watched and talked to each other. It was great.  I'm sure y'all are probably tired of all my sappy posts about MM, but he really is great.  We get along really well and I don't think I've ever been this close to another person in my life.

After dinner we went to Wal-Mart to pick up a few things and decided to watch a movie at home on Pay-Per-View.  I think it was about 9 when we got home and...well, I'm almost ashamed to tell you what happened next.

NO, you dirty people, not THAT.  What happened was....

We decided to go to bed.  At 9:00.  On a Friday night.  When our kids were not home and we had the house to ourselves.

There's just really no going back from that, is there?

Case in point?

Yesterday we drove the kids up to meet the RB and on the way home we stopped at convenience store to fill up and get a snack.  I bought a candy bar and as we were standing there browsing the shelf MM said, "Remember when candy bars were 50 cents?  I can't believe they're over a dollar now!".

Huh.

Then later, "It only cost us $39 to fill up!  Isn't that great??  But you know, I remember when gas was $1 a gallon."

Oh yeah, we definitely crossed a line.

Yikes

We spent the weekend in Salt Lake City for my brother's graduation. At some point in time (most likely never) I plan to do a post about that. Today is not that day.  I have something much more important to blog about today.

I have come to the sad realization, my friends, that I'm ugly. Or I've become ugly. Or I was always ugly and just didn't realize it until recently.  Or maybe I just take really ugly pictures?  Actually, I think it might be that MM has made me ugly in the last three years.  Case in point?  The pictures I've seen of myself from the graduation ceremony are just scary and wrong.  I'm not kidding!  I look like a freaking man.  A boxy man at that.  WTF?  Now, I've never been super model pretty.  I wasn't beat with an ugly stick as a child or anything, but I've always thought of myself more as cute than, say, drop dead gorgeous. But lately?  Lately I've been thinking I might need to start taking better care of myself.  I'm surprised animals and small children don't run screaming when I enter a room.

Note to Self: It's time to stop being so lazy; drop that extra five (ok ok, 15) pounds, fix your hair and use extra mascara.  Children and small animals the world over will thank you.

Joking aside (though I wasn't really joking), I look tired and sallow in all the pictures from this weekend.  Funny how I look awful now that I'm not working and supposedly stress free, isn't it?

And no, I'm not sharing the pictures with you. The point isn't to get all of you to say, "Oh, you don't look bad at all!" It's just that I realized how bad I've let myself go (and doesn't that just make me sound like an almost-30-something housewife from suburbia?) and I really need to do something about it.

The dark circle look is so not hot.

Mornings Suck

It's no secret around here that I am not a morning person.  Everyone, from MM to the kids to the dogs, knows to avoid me in the mornings.  I wake up bleary eyed and in desperate need of coffee.  Once I climb out of bed I do this great Zombie act until about halfway through my second cup, at which time my eyes open a little wider and I become somewhat human (that's putting it mildly, I know).  I require, at minimum, half an hour of silence in the morning to wake up. If my half hour is interrupted by talking, it takes me at least an additional hour to become fully awake and ready for the day.  No, I'm not exaggerating.

I really do need silence in the mornings - at least half an hour to wake up.  I usually get up, use the bathroom, wake Little Man and tell him to get a shower, start the coffee, wake up The Girl to get up and get ready to get in the shower (she's not a morning person either), then pour my first cup of coffee.  By the time LM comes out of his room for breakfast, I'm usually ok with him talking to me. Not always, but usually.

MM gets out of bed all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. It pisses me off.  I don't understand how he can be so chipper and happy in the morning.  As if that wasn't bad enough, the jerk doesn't drink coffee, either.  So he wakes up all happy and ready to start the day WITH NO EFFING COFFEE! I know, I don't think he's human either.

The key to my mornings is definitely silence.  That half hour to myself to play online or read a book is definitely what determines my day.  So being stuck in a hotel room with my brother and husband isn't really ideal for me and my morning silences.  I wake up and one or the other of them is all kinds of chatty.  Either that, or my sister is calling 5 times to see if we want to go to breakfast with her.  Look, I don't eat breakfast.  Never have, probably never will.  I also don't talk on the phone in the morning before I've had coffee.  You'd think after knowing me for 20+ years my siblings would know this, but apparently they forgot.  MM knows I like to be left alone, but I guess he figures since we're on vacation the same morning rules don't apply. He's wrong. They apply big time.

We're having a great time sight seeing and hanging out with my brother and his friends, but I'll be glad when I can get my quiet mornings back.

What about the rest of you?  What kind of morning routine do you have?  Anything you need in the morning to make your day just right?

This "Stay At Home Mom" Thing Ain't for the Easily Distracted

So. Been awhile, hasn't it? I wish I could say I've got some wonderful excuse for why I've been so absent, but the truth is..I don't. Mostly I'm just lazy. I've been busing doing stuff around the house and lying around reading and watching t.v. (no, I'm still not watching soaps, but thanks) and basically avoiding the internet. Well, maybe not all of the internet, but my blog at least. It's strange but I think I have less free time now that I don't have a job than I did when I was working full time.

This week I'm finishing the deep clean of my house I started the week before Halloween. Then on Thursday MM and I are heading to Salt Lake City to see my baby brother graduate from college. I'm so proud of him! If you all remember, my sister graduated earlier this year. To know that both of them have graduated..well, I'm just super proud of them. My brother actually finished school a couple months ago. He was offered an amazing job in the Sacramento area and he and his gf are living there now. But he wanted to go through with the graduation ceremony (and we all wanted him to), so he's traveling back to SLC this weekend, too.

MM and I decided to make a mini-vacation out of it and we're going to spend an extra night there. The graduation is Friday, so we're going to drive out on Thursday and come home on Friday. His mom is going to come stay with the kids, so it'll just be the two of us. I'm really looking forward to the trip. MM has been working a lot of hours lately to cover what I'm not bringing in anymore. To say he's been a grumpy bear is putting it mildly. He's been close to being murdered a couple times (all of you should be in awe of my self-restraint at this point), but we've managed. Barely. We're talking this close to me killing him. Seriously. Hmm, did I have a point?

Oh yes, I remember...

So getting away this weekend should be good for both of us. MM needs a break and us having some quality alone time is going to be great. We haven't decided what we're going to do yet, but just getting out of town itself is enough to start with. We might take a day to ski, or maybe do some cold weather hiking. We'll see.

Otherwise we don't have a lot going on right now. We're just plugging along. I'm searching for a new job pretty diligently. At this point I'd be happy with anything that provides a steady paycheck. Any of you out there in blogland want to hire me for...something? *bats eyelashes* Yeah, I didn't think so.

We are getting out more now that the weather has cooled down. Yesterday we went hiking with some friends. Tomorrow MM is off and the kids don't have school, so we're going on another excursion. Either four-wheeling or hiking, or maybe both. This is definitely my favorite thing about living in Southern Cali. While most people are gearing up to stay indoors for the next few months, we're getting out and playing more. It's been kind of chilly the last couple days for my tastes, though. I think it was in the mid 60s? yesterday when we were hiking. By the time we headed back to the Jeep it was getting dark and it was in the 50s. Blech. I much prefer the warmer weather.

I'll try to post more in the coming weeks, but I'm not making any promises. Especially if I get a job soon. Please, Lord, let me find a job soon. :P

In the meantime, tell me: What's new with all of you? I miss you!!!

  • 01:42 Halloween party in full swing. We ate. We drank. We made merry. Now we're turning on the Wii.
  • 01:59 Party has finally wound down. We went through all but 3 bags of candy. Sooo tired now.
  • 21:43 been recovering all day long. I'm not as young as I used to be.
  • 21:52 Curious: Would you buy a book if it meant you might win a gift cert for $100?
  • 21:56 what if the book you had to buy was the 5th book in a series? Would that stop you from buying it? Or does it matter?
  • 21:59 Ok, what if I said, 'If you buy Demon Bound by Meljean Brook, which is out on Tuesday, I'll enter you to win a $100 gc?" Any takers?
  • 22:12 munching on carrot sticks and trying to write. It's not going so well. Stupid reviews and/or contest posts.
  • 22:19 Odd Me Fact: Carrots are my comfort food. I always want them when I'm stressed or upset. Who needs chocolate when you can have carrots?
